Applications in archaeology

It is possible to differentiate "extensive" studies, which seek to define areas of interest within large surfaces, and the "intensive", whose purpose is to locate and define structures or other archaeological targets with precision.

In extensive studies magnetometric and light electromagnetic methods are usually employed. For the intensive studies the common methods are magnetometry, light EM with a denser grid, georadar GPR and electric tomography (ERT).

Main geophysical applications in archaeology are:

  • Location of buried anthropic structures like walls, rooms, ovens …

  • Detection of buried metallic objects.

  • Definition of non-natural filled areas.

  • Location of typical natural limits for archaeological remains.
